Math and science for grades 7–9: no cramming and no ready-made homework answers

A place where thinking grows,
where formulas come alive in your hands

E.V.G. Lab is an innovative learning space for 5 subjects. We do not give ready-made answers, and we are firmly against thoughtless copying: the Socratic method, feedback on photos of the notebook and live simulators teach students to think systematically.

E

Explore (investigate)

Math and physics are not dogmas but a testing ground for discoveries. The student makes hypotheses, checks them on the simulators and understands the laws of nature on their own.

V

Visualize (see it)

Instead of confusing letters: live geometric drawings, function graphs, physical levers, bits of information and chemical reactions.

G

Grow (develop)

Step-by-step growth of logic and confidence. Every solved step brings understanding: “I can get to the heart of it myself, without hints and without copying.”

5 math and science labs in action

Switch between subjects and change the parameters: the mathematical markup recalculates the models instantly, in real time.

Slope of the line ($k$): +1.5
Shift along the Y axis ($b$): +1.0

The student sees: the sign of the coefficient $k$ makes the function increase or decrease, and $b$ gives the point where the line crosses the $OY$ axis.

Leg $a$: 3
Leg $b$: 4
Hypotenuse: $c = 5.00$
1. Force of gravity: F = m · g (g = 9.8 m/s²)
2. Moment of force: M = F · d
3. Condition of balance: M₁ vs M₂
Load on the left ($m_1$): 4 kg
Arm on the left ($d_1$): 3 m
Load on the right ($m_2$): 6 kg
Arm on the right ($d_2$): 2 m
Click the bits (0 or 1) to build a byte in the computer's memory:
Decimal number: 65 | ASCII: 'A'
Acid-base balance (pH): 7.0 (Neutral)

The indicator changes color: red ($pH < 4$), green ($pH = 7$), purple ($pH > 10$).

The Socratic method: how AI teaches to think, not to copy

A live demonstration of working through a real problem. See how the partner reads a photo of a handwritten draft, keeps a teaching pause and uses guiding questions to lead the student to their own discovery.

Working in a real paper notebook

The student does not tap the screen without thinking: all the working is done with a blue pen on squared paper. A photo of the page goes to the tutor, who reads the working and goes through the mistake with questions, not with a ready-made answer. Only the student sees the photo: no location data and no other eyes.

Deep motor memory

Writing by hand activates the sensorimotor areas of the brain. Formulas and algorithms stay in memory 3 times more firmly than with mouse clicks.

Computer vision

The tutor uses computer vision to read handwritten fractions, roots, systems of equations and drawings directly from a photo of squared paper, and goes through them with questions.

Neat work for school

The student practises how to present the work: draws with a ruler, marks the answer, writes clearly. They come to the school board and to exams with a steady hand.

A school problem • The Socratic method versus red ink

A familiar nightmare in the notebook: “Wrong solution, think harder!”

Every evening thousands of students sit over difficult exercises, and in the morning they get their notebook back covered in red ink. No explanation of the logic, no look at the reasons: only a crossed-out answer, a big bad grade and the order to “think harder”. At E.V.G. Lab we turn a mistake from a reason for shame into the main engine of understanding.

Ordinary school • The pain of a mistake ❌ Grade: 2 out of 5 (fail)
No. 214. Solve the equation:
7x - 2(3x - 4) = 18

= 7x - 6x + 8 = 18 → x + 8 = 18 → x = 10!
🎉 “Right, minus times minus gives plus! I found the mistake myself!”

The parent panel: an honest knowledge radar and care for health

01 / 22

We have deliberately rethought the word “control”. For us it is not watching the screen, not keyloggers and not evening questioning over the school diary. It is a smart radar of real skills, protection of the teenager's eyesight and a way to support them in one click, while keeping trust and personal space.

Personal boundaries without surveillance

E.V.G. Lab does not look into social networks or the browser history. No adult sees the child's chat with the tutor or the photos of the notebook: not the parents, not the teacher, not a specialist, not a platform administrator. Adults see only progress and how well topics are mastered.

Only ready-made buttons, no free text: this is care, not one more chat. The child sees the postcard quietly, in the corner of the screen, and closes it themselves. In the child's card you choose the language in which the tutor answers them: one of 33 European languages, from Belarusian and Ukrainian to German and Polish. There you also find a sign-in card with a QR code for the tablet (the PIN is not printed on it) and a new PIN if the child has forgotten theirs; the child can also change the PIN themselves.

A radar of understanding instead of bad grades

A dry grade in the register does not teach thinking. The family account shows a skills radar for each child: the streak of days, study time for the week, progress in topics by subject in the words “mastered”, “consolidating”, “started”, and the knowledge map, the same one the child sees. You can see what to talk through in a calm conversation without arguments. Invite the second parent or a grandmother to the account: they will see the same radar, but not the chat. In the same way, a teacher invites a colleague to the class. Each invitation shows its step: the link is not opened yet, opened, the account is created and waits for the e-mail confirmation, or the person has already signed in; an e-mail invitation can be sent again.

A child's profile in a couple of minutes

The parent signs up and, in the “Add a child” wizard, enters how to address the child, the year of birth, the grade, the curriculum and the language, chooses a PIN and gets a sign-in card with a QR code. If the child already has an account, the child shows a one-time “code for the parent” in their own app and confirms that this is their family. The child's card shows in which classes and specialist practices the child studies, and either parent can remove the child from them.

Step-by-step tasks: every line is checked

The child solves a task from the bank line by line, and every line is checked by our own program built on SymPy, not by AI. A right step is marked at once; a typo is not a mistake and costs nothing; a typical mistake gets a hint written in advance for this very task; otherwise a calm "try again". Formulas are typed with symbol buttons and shown at once the way they look on paper. The child only gets tasks a person has checked: a parent of the family or an expert. Only the child sees the lines of the solution; adults see only the progress.

Mastered means solved on one's own

A skill counts as mastered when the child has solved three of its tasks in a row without mistakes and without hints; a typo is not a mistake. A topic's mastery is made up of its skills. Talking with the tutor gives experience (XP) and the day streak, but does not mark anything as mastered. A mastered skill comes back for review on an FSRS schedule: the more confidently the child solves, the less often. "Solve a task" has mixed practice, where review tasks alternate with new ones, and the knowledge map shows what is due for review. Adults see only numbers: how many skills are mastered, how many are due for review and how many tasks were solved without hints.

People check the tasks

Our program first checks every task of the bank on 200 sets of numbers. Then people look at it. In the family cabinet a parent sees the task the way the child will see it and answers three questions: is the language clear, does it use only formulas from the programme, is the drawing readable. Three times "yes" and the task opens only for the children of this family. An expert checks the task for all children. One "no" with a reason hides the task from everyone at once, and the administrator looks into it. Task creation is still in a trial period. No adult sees the child's solutions or chats in the process.

Live graphs with a description

When a task has a graph, the child sees it live: it can be moved with a finger or the mouse and zoomed. A program draws it from the task’s formula, not AI, and our checking engine compares the graph with the task’s formula in advance. Next to the graph there is a description in words (what kind of line it is, where it crosses the axes, where it rises and where it falls) and a table of key points. They are in the child’s language and screen readers read them. When the graph is part of the task, the description and the table do not contain the answer. Colours follow the theme, high contrast and the colour palettes of the comfort settings. After solving some tasks the child can open the topic’s simulator with the numbers of that same task.

Specialists and teachers set up the lab

The cabinet has a questionnaire for specialists (speech therapists, special educators) and a short questionnaire for teachers of pilot classes. In it adults describe how they build their sessions: which supports and prompts are needed, which errors are most common and what counts as mastery. With these answers the team sets up future tasks. The questionnaire holds no data about children — only the adults' experience. Pilot participants who allowed it themselves are named on the thanks page. Thanks page

The tutor guides, it does not solve

When a child makes an unusual mistake or presses "Explain", the tutor gets the analysis of our program: where the child is on the way to the solution and what the next step is. The tutor computes nothing itself and asks one guiding question. Before the hint is shown, our program checks every formula and every number in it: if it gives away the answer or has wrong math, the tutor writes the hint again, and if that one fails too, the child gets the hint written in advance for the task. The child chooses how the tutor talks: literal and calm (the default), warm, with humour, short, or in the style of a favourite hero. An AI moderator checks the hero first; the tutor still stays a program and does not quote films or books. Only the child sees this choice.

A calm screen and a “Quiet room”

In “Solve a task” the screen always answers four questions: what to do — a short instruction with an icon; how many — circles for a series of five tasks; when it ends — all circles are filled; what next — a card to choose one more task, a break, the chat or exit. A mistake brings no red cross and no harsh sound — only a calm icon and a word. Sounds play at the volume the child chose, and with the setting “less motion” there are no animations. The “Quiet room” button is in the app header, in “Solve a task” and in every window of the app — the contents, the knowledge map, the gallery and others: it opens a muted screen with one phrase, no sounds and, if the child wants, a breathing circle. The task and the chat stay where they were. The button tells adults and the tutor nothing: the general activity counters show only the number of taps.

An app on the phone screen

EVG Lab installs on a phone, tablet or computer as an app — right from the browser, without an app store: the child gets their own “EVG Lab”, adults get “EVG Hub” with a quick way into each circle, and any circle can be added as a separate icon. Simulators that were already opened work without the internet too. A child and a parent sign in on one device, each as themselves: when one signs out, the other stays, and the parent’s hub asks for the password after a break if a child uses the device too.

Notifications — when it suits you

An adult chooses for each kind: push on the phone, e-mail or nothing, and sets quiet hours and their own time zone: the “may need support” signal (with no chat text), the weekly skills summary on Sundays, requests to join a class and invitations. A child gets postcards from the family, a reminder to practise on the days and at the hours the child chose, and a hint to take a break after long work — the child can switch all of it off. All notifications are collected in the hub’s bell and in the child’s app menu. On a device shared with a child, the hub’s push is not switched on.

Sign in with a fingerprint or face

Adults and children can sign in with a passkey — a fingerprint, the face or Windows Hello — instead of a password or PIN. The fingerprint and the face stay on the device; we keep only a public key. The child’s PIN stays as the fallback, and if a tablet is lost, a parent deletes the child’s keys in the child’s card. On a shared device the hub can also be confirmed with a key after a break.

Child safety and an honest AI

The child always sees that an AI tutor answers — a program, not a person. The tutor has fixed rules for children: only age-appropriate topics, no requests for personal data, and at signs of danger gentle advice to talk to a grown-up and the helpline number of the country where the child lives (numbers checked against official sources). Every message gets a safety check before the answer; if the child may need support, the guardian gets a signal without the chat text. The child reports a poor answer with one button. The class: the teacher sees the curriculum, not the chat

The teacher creates a class and gives the students a code, a link or a QR code: the child sends a request, and the teacher accepts it. The teacher does not create accounts for children: if a student has no account, the teacher invites a parent, who adds the child in their family. The class overview shows how each student masters the topics of the class curriculum, by student and by topic, and nothing else: no chat, no photos, nothing the child studies outside the curriculum.

A specialist practice: speech therapist, special education teacher, psychologist

A specialist creates their own practice and invites colleagues. Specialists on the platform go through a qualification check, and the family sees the mark “verified” next to the name: such a specialist can invite a family by email or by link, and the family can invite a specialist they know who has no mark. The specialist's contact details are not shown to the family. The child appears in the practice only after a separate consent from the parent: the invitation page says in simple words what the specialist will see (topic progress, study time, summary counts of actions) and what they will not see: the chat, photos, accessibility settings. Private notes are seen only by colleagues in the practice. The parent can withdraw consent at any time, and the data stays with the child.

The E.V.G. Lab manifesto: an open letter to school teachers

Dear Teacher! If you have learned that your student studies with E.V.G. Lab, please be assured: we are your main allies. The platform is strictly against websites with ready-made homework answers and was created so that the child learns to think and to understand the meaning of every step.

1. The principle of no ready-made homework answers at all

A strict ban on giving ready-made answers and roots is built into the system. We are strictly against thoughtless copying from answer books. If a student asks “solve it for me”, the system gently refuses and asks a Socratic guiding question.

2. Work in the notebook is required

No thoughtless clicking: the student must write the working with a blue pen in a squared notebook and send a photo. This keeps fine motor skills and neat presentation.

3. Developing self-checking

When checking homework, the system reports only the number of the problem with a mistake, but does not point to the line or the sign, so the student is encouraged to find the error on their own.

4. A prepared conversation partner comes to your lesson

Free from evening stress and having worked through the difficult places step by step, the student comes to class confident, raises their hand and understands the logic of your curriculum.

“We are not raising a calculator, but a person who can think, doubt, check facts and find a way out of difficult problems. The teacher was, is and remains the main source of inspiration and the main mentor.”
Note: Ready-made homework answers (in Russian schools often called GDZ) are popular websites and books with ready-made answers and worked solutions, from which students often copy solutions mechanically without understanding the subject. E.V.G. Lab deliberately removes the problem of copying and brings back interest in finding solutions on your own.
